The Weeknd's gang rape scandal and his short-lived love affairs

The Weeknd (AKA Abel Makkonen Tesfaye) is a well-known troubled singer. His gloomy childhood is very unfortunate but it precedes him. It is a type of childhood I personally wish he could recover from. His father abandoned him at a tender age of six. Years later The Weeknd became a shoplifter with heavy use of drugs like cocaine, ketamine and MDMA. In his interview with the Guardian, he admitted to only seeing his father when he was six and then again briefly when he was "11 or 12".

Now, what does that have to do with gang rape and the women he dates? Well, the answer is complex. Deep psychological scars eventually lead to a chain reaction that can manifest in numerous facets. First shoplifting and then heavy drug abuse? Then what? We should keep in mind that The Weeknd isn’t getting any younger. With his psychological issues unresolved, unfortunately, his childhood erotic behavior became a gateway to even more detrimental adult behavior. Drug abuse quickly became boring to him (but probably still a vital part of his life). Singing about his fantasies became a therapeutic mechanism to relief his lifelong pain. He eventually became a huge, powerful star because people like his music. He is talented, sexy, a good songwriter, and an acute businessman.
What most people don't realize is that with that type of power his fantasies can finally become reality…and...we all know what his fantasies are:

  • “Go back to town and fuck every girl I know”- The Weeknd in Reminder
  • “Bring your girl to my show, give her floor seats, then she go downtown like she owe me”- The Weeknd in King of the Fall

And then something scary happens. He sings about gang rape:

“Well, baby you can have it all. There's just something that I need from you…is to meet my boys. I got a lot of boys and we can make you right. And if you get too high…baby, come over here and RIDE IT OUT”- The Weeknd in XO/The host

Taking an intoxicated woman and introducing her to your crew of 'a lot of boys' so y’all can ‘ride it out’ is undeniably gang rape. This fantasy of his can potentially become a reality. We can’t even say with certainty that it hasn’t. Who fantasizes about things like these anyway? The majority of The Weeknd’s fanbase are women and young girls who happily sing to this song. Are these people desensitized to the dangers of these kinds of ideologies? Ever wondered why there are women who blame a woman who got raped? Failing to empathize with her? Isn’t it a result of missing an opportunity to learn about a woman’s worth and that her body belongs to one but herself as children? There is a high chance that these women might have been dominated by an abusive manly figure for a significant period in their lives or endured adverse behavior from men somehow.

The Weeknd’s promotion of these ideologies isn’t helping at all. Clearly, he has exhausted the capacity of music to help him soothe his demons. What he needs right now is professional help. Wouldn’t it be more inspiring to hear him singing about something more positive? Like overcoming his life-long depression? If you are his fan and are reading this, I believe you know that I am right. The money and the Grammies are of little importance to him. His soul is worth saving.

The Weeknd is clearly in turmoil psychologically. I know I don’t need to say this but the women close to him are subject to his demons and all have chosen to part ways with him no matter how much they love him. His relationships cannot last. We know that this is just a tit-bit of a much bigger issue. I truly hope that one day Abel may confront and conquer his demons. It is never too late.
